Hi, just in case you don't look athe Sonett PAge I am reposting here.
I have "Blown" the trans in my Sonett after replacing it a few weeks ago with a "New/Used" trans. It now doesnt have 1st, 2nd and Reverse.
The original trans had a very noisy diff, I suspected a loose pinion nut but was concerned re damage and abaility to repair it, so I bought a secondhand trans and shipped it to Australia
So an update
The trans is definatley "cactus" I've emailed Bud Clark and he agrees, I reckon I fitted the "catches" wrong an dit allowed me to select maybe second and fourth gear at once, gearlever not fully over to left. and sheared part of the 1st, 2nd, reverse shaft, prob ath einput gear to that shaft.
Bud's advice was to swap the good shaft out of my old Noisy" TRans with th ebroken one in the "New" box. Thsi wodl avoid any shimming issues with th epinion shaft which I dont have tools to set up for.
I still need to get a press etc and do somethibg I've never done before, but help is a long way off in Australia fo rthese Trans!
So while waiting to get the Sonett around to my Shed, we've had a very wet Spring and I need to tow it as the car won't drive up the unpaved muddy slope in 3rd (well I am not prepared to try it)today I partially stripped the old noisy transmission to get it ready to pull the 1st, 2nd, reverse shaft out and After taking the back cover off, its clear the pinion nut is very loose.
Despite the drain plug being covered in metal shavings, the pinion itself looks ok, and the Crown-wheel beside a couple of chips on some teeth that look quite old, also ok.
What I was wondering is should instead of moving the shaft from this trans to the one that broke should I just retighten the pinion nut on this one and see how I go?
Is there anything I need to look for on the Crownwheel and Pinion for signs that its badly damaged?
If so I reckon I just need a new lock washer and nut(I believe there is a new design) and maybe the driveshaft seals?
any advice??
Or am I best to press the two shafts out? Can I do this without removing the other 2 shafts?
Regards
StephenB
