I think I've solved the problem by tracking down an NOS Pierburg fuel pump...a pricey little item but I like the idea of keeping the car as original as possible. One mod that a friend of mine did was to install an electric pump to refill the carbs for easier starting, so I'll keep the suggestions in mind.
