To the contrary, I think anyone who would undertake driving a 93B around New Zealand would positively REVEL in being called a "loose nut!" In fact, that's one of my favorite things about old Saabs... the number of terrific loose nuts you meet. I'd like to think I'm a bit of a loose nut myself, even though my current Ford-V4-powered 1974 Sonett III is boringly tame and mundane compared to the older, more exotic Saabs.I never owned a 93, but the first car I *did* own -- back in my college days -- was a 1963 GT-850. It certainly wasn't what I'd call "reliable" in the Toyota sense of the word -- pulling into a parking lot for a quick replacement of a fouled plug was a fairly common exercise, as was parking with one wheel up on a curb so I could "bump-start" it in case the starter jammed. But the thing never actually stranded me -- and it certainly never bored me. (Besides, I had paid $40 for it, so I didn't expect too much!)
This attitude of mine reminds me of an article I read a few years ago, after Ford had bought Jaguar and had made great strides in improving the quality of its products. They rounded up a group of owners of Jaguars from the Bad Old Days and invited them to sample the new, improved versions. The Old Jaguarians found the new cars much more reliable -- and detested them. I specifically remember a lady who owned two V-12 E-types, after being lent a new XJ to try out: "I hated it. It was so boring. I drove it all weekend and it never even caught on fire."
