Fuel starvation/fuel pump bad?

Now that I got the rear brakes back together, I put a gallon of gas in newly refurbished gas tank, amd found out that the people who did it did not prep the tank well, and there was sealer over the fuel filler neck. I took the gas tank out, pierced all the inlet/outlets I could find, and I'm still not getting any fuel to the pump. I disconnected the fuel line from the pump, blew the line out again with air, and I could feel air and hear bubbles in the gas tank. I replaced the fuel pump with an old one I had on a spare engine, and still no fuel being sucked from the tank. I disconnected the intake hose from the pump, filled a container with gas, and after about 6 attempts , the fuel was sucked out of the container, but the pump left crud in the bottom of the container. How much suction should a good pump create? The way I figure, if I can blow air into the tank, I should at least get a trickle from the fuel line. Ideas? Something I'm overlooking?
Thanks,
Kent
