defective bearings for 99 water pump

I just had the engine removed to replace *another* idler shaft and water pump in my '80 99GLi. It turns out the water pump bearing had disintegrated. This bearing came with a genuine SAAB water pump repair kit. Not only that, but the new bearing from the new water pump kit has a bad glitch in it. The bearing is an odd size, and is not available through your local industrial bearing supply house. We ended up using an old bearing I had (probably the original) which checked out ok (I hope!). It has fewer, but larger balls than the replacement. The new bearing is marked "MACH1, JAPAN", which is a brand I have never heard of. The original bearing has no markings on it that I can see.
The water pump bearing has a 39mm O.D. - 20mm bore. The closest standard match I could find had 39mm O.D.-22mm bore. I suppose if you needed to, you could make a thin sleeve to fit between the bearing and pump shaft.
Has anyone else had experience with defective bearings ?
