Having owned a converted '80 gli to 8v turbo and currently driving a 16vt in another 99 '80 Gli, I would agree. My eight valve had a prepped head, calloway turbo fueler fifth injector and Jacobs ignition. The thing would rev like a maniac with a wonderful throaty howl. I loved driving the car and still cring when I think about it getting rear ended.
My 16v takes less tinkering to keep on the road and the APC is really nice but I sometimes miss the old eight valve in my 99.
