The clutch! (Was: 1967 96 -- hard shifting into reverse)

Watchout! Hard shifting is a common symptom of the clutch not releasing all the way, and reverse seems to be the first place it shows up (in our experience, at least.)
If the freeplay adjustment is OK (check free movement at pedal; adjust w. screw on bellhousing opposite slave cylinder) and there are no leaks or air in the clutch hydraulics, then unfortunately your symptom may mean the clutch needs replacing.
(Although we once had a two-stroke so old that grease and crud had accumulated around the clutch disc, preventing it from releasing fully; pulling the drivetrain, separating the engine from the transaxle, and cleaning out all the muck was enough to fix it, although if you're going to all that trouble you might as well replace the parts!)
Whatever you do, don't dink around and ignore this problem, because if you keep forcing shifts with a bad clutch, eventually you'll screw up the transaxle, and that's a LOT more work to fix!
Okay, now the good new: pulling the driveline on a 2-stroke is much less unpleasant than a V4 (you don't even need a hoist if you've got a couple of strong friends -- they can just grab it and hoik it out!)
