Installing boot spring....Is there a better way of doing this?

I have just been through the ordeal of re-installing my boot spring in my 72 99.
This spring is very tough aqnd can not be stretched by hand. To insall the spring I used a trolley jack to first extend the spring and then placed many bolts between the gaps in the spring to keep it extended. This worked but it is a ba****td to take the bolts out again! Also it turns out that the spring really needed to be placed in the second hole not the first to keep the boot up fully, but I am not to keen to go thought the same process again.
Surely there is an easier way of doing this.
