I'm leaning more towards a fuel problem...

The only reason I say fuel is because I had the exact same problem. My 96 died without warning. It restarted and died about three times and then, nothing - just as you explained. If I poured a small amount of gas down the carb, it would restart and die. The main jet of my Solex carb was completely clogged.
If you want to check for spark, throw a spark plug in the end of a detached plug wire and ground the electrode to the block. While an assistant cranks the engine, watch for the plug to arc. NOTE: Depending on the quality of your plug wires, you may want to hold onto your wire with insulated pliers.
