Can you pin-point the location of the sound as being high or low in the engine?? A friend of mine had a Volvo 122S that he did a valve job on in New Jersey and started driving back to Boston. About 50 miles out of Boston there was suddenly a rapping sound from inside the engine. He decided it wasn't causing permanenet damamge and had no other way to get home, so he drove on home. The next morning I got to work and he had his car inside the shop trying to figure out the noise. We fianlly decided that it was in the upper end, so we pulled the head. There was a piece of piston ring stuck in the top of the piston and banging into the head every time the piston came up. Although it still meant rebuilding the bottom end, this problem was preferable to a bad rod bearing, which would be low in the engine.

I think all the 8-valve engines use solid lifters, so it isn't going to be a collapsed hydraulic lifter. It could be a loosely adjusted valve, but I wouldn't expect it to show up just because the oil got changed. When is the last time you checked valve clearances? You didn't move something in the engine compartment that is now causing a knocking sound because it's up against something?
