This has to be one of the worst faults with this car. It took me ages to suss out. It is basically a bad earth which can come from more than one area, and I'll bet you haven't touched any of the electrics and tried to backtrack your movements. First thing to do is turn the rheostat down completely and try switching the lights on. Secondly, bypass the rheostat completely i.e. join the 2 wires. Thirdly, there is a black wire connected on the back of the instrument clock ( or is it speedo? can't remember ), check this is OK. Fourthly, there is a black wire fixed onto a support bar below the dashboard, check this is not loose. Fifthly, check earth strap.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't the rheostat.
