I bought my first '78 99L with 143,000 miles on it. The first two years I put almost 80,000 on it. In the five years I drove it, I doubled the mileage, then many parts, including the engine (rebuilt at 225,000) and the transmission (never rebuilt) went into another '78 99L. The first one was too badly rusted from East Coast winter salt to keep the body on the road. When that car came off the road, the transmission had about 340,000 on it and was just beginning to whine a little bit.
I bought a '75 4-door with 170,000+ showing on a a broken odometer and with a blown 3rd gear synchro. I nursed that one for 3 years before I decided that the transmissoin was in imminent destruct mode. The '78 and later transmissions are beefier and more reliable than the earlier transmissions.
