Are you sure that it had anything to do with pistoncompression or was the water just sloshing around in side the block?
The sure way to check is to do a compression check on the engine. You'll be able to tel if the head gasket is blown, especially if there is lower compression on two adjacent cylinders.
I once had a 96 V-4 come into the shop with the complaint of water being forced out the radiator cap. I put a pressure tester on the cooling system and cranked the starter. The needle on the pressure tester pegged ...and that was just at cranking speed. One head gasket was blown.
