The '67 shifter has a thin nylon tube on the end of the shift lever that goes into a hole in the flattened upper end of the rod that goes through the firewall. These are inside of the stamped steel housing on the steering column. There is also a plastic ball where the lever goes into that housing. The ball breaks and the steel housing flares and cracks. I've had both happen on various cars. I dobt that any of htese pars can be had at a dealer's parts counter anymore, but you might get lucky if the parts guy is even willing to acknowledge that SAAB made cars that long ago.
Removal of the shifter requires disconnecting the bottom end of the rod inside the engine bay. Take the nut off one end of the tapered pin and screw it onto the other end to pop the pin out of the universal joint. (I _always_ put a washer underneath the nut.) Remove the locking screw on the under side of the column housing and unscrew the big nut that the shift rod goes through. Sometimes I've had trouble doing this because the lock screw buggers the threads on the big nut. Disassembly of the lever and rod from the housing is a bit muddled in my memory, but if you get this far, you can probably figure it out. There's a snap ring somewhere things together.
If you're in Britain, RHD shifters might be different from the LHD US models that I've had apart.
