Don't loose faith. This job isn't that difficult.

First of all, Stewart, I am recalling my own experience rebuilding the water pump about 25 years ago in a 71 99E. Chances are only the seals in your water pump need to be replaced. To find out, top off the coolant and start the engine. If the seals are shot then you will see coolant running down the engine block from a vent slot located about 4cm below the pump cover plate. If this is the case then try to get hold of a rebuild kit that includes the cover plate gasket and the rubber seals.
Removing the pump cover is not problem - 3 bolts as I recall. The impeller bolt has a left-handed thread. That is, you turn it clockwise to loosen it. Instead of trying to get the special extraction tool (which is nothing more than a sliding hammer), I used a flat piece of metal about 1.5cm wide by roughly 4 or 5 dm long (hey, this is a Yank who doesn't like to use those bloody English units). I drilled a hole in the middle so that the impeller bolt would fit through it loosely. Next I drilled holes at both ends of the metal and bent the metal piece into a square-bottomed "U" with the impeller bolt in the center of the bottom of the "U". Place a long bolt through the two holes at the end of the "U", thus completing the top of a rectangle. Now screw the impeller bolt back into the top of the pump, attaching this contraption to the pump. What you have now is a device that will allow you to strike upward (on the cross bolt across the top) with a hammer - effectively a sliding hammer. Keep tapping on the upper bolt and you will slowly extract the pump from the engine.
Hope this helps. It is rather crude, but it worked for me. Word of warning: make sure the cover plate gasket is the proper thickness (maybe check a manual or with you Saab dealer). I had a neighbor who destroyed the pump gears when he used a gasket that was too thin, allowing the impeller to engage its cover.
Come on, Stewart, don't give up on that old gem for the sake of a set of seals!
