It depends upon which distributor you have as to how easy it is to take it apart. Some had the base plate, under the rotating plate that holds the points, mounted into the body then a tab was peened over to hold it. I've removed these plates then drilled a couple of holes and used tiny sheetmetal screws to hold the plate in place on assembly. This has to be done by figuring out where to put the screws so that they won't interfere with the rotation of the points mounting plate. Some distributors had the fixed plate held in by screws through the side of the body. These are easy to disassemble and reassemble. You could try spraying some WD-40 down into the area below the fixed plate before you go to the trouble of disassembling the distributor. You might want to remove the distributor from the car when you do this so that any rust is washed out rather than into the engine. As long as you don't get the points oily, you can be fairly liberal. Part of the tune-up servicing is supposed to include oiling the felt pad underneath the rotor (pull it off and look underneath it). This lubes the top end of the shaft and allows the certifugal advance to rotate freely on it. This oiling is usually neglected, even by many mechanics. I've worked on distributors on which the centrifugal advance was frozen on the shaft, as well as ones on which the fit between them was so loose that the dwell changed 10-15 degrees when you reved up the engine.
