Hi Don,
longtime saab driver, mechanic, and owner (current project here
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1767660&a=13648853&f=0)
a 78 EMS is a GREAT car. I would only consider the 75-78's, although it's kind of weird, originally the EMS's were Electronic Manual Special. 75-78 they were mechanical FI and worked a lot better, but i guess they didn't want to change the letters.
I had a 78 EMS and to the best of my recollection, the major improvements were a quick ratio (3.5 lock to lock) rack, different final drive gearing, and, I may be wrong here, but the cams *had* to be a different grind than stock, they were just TOO lumpy sounding at idle. Great car, not blindingly quick, but as my Bo Duke V8 diehard motorhead counterpart remarked after driving it, "hey, at least it feels like it's really trying". Very USABLE power, in the right hands you can do some serious damage.
Seems like the only 78 EMS's i've seen (west coast) are always that dark Cardinal red metallic with the similarly colored interior that always turns orange. They always have the 'soccer ball' wheels, essentially they are like Turbo's of the same vintage but without the wheels and spoiler.
