Do you have the old style plate or the newer 900 plate? Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Tue, 20 Nov 2001 20:10:55 In Reply to: Re: Easier way, Kevin, Tue, 20 Nov 2001 08:39:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The older style plate was much easier to work with without any special tools. We used to use the car's jack to compress the fingers by sticking the plate under the cars jacking point and using the weight of the car to compress the fingers. We normally used a spacer the size of the throw out bearing between the jack and the fingers. This allowed for installation of an old v-belt under the fingers to keep them compressed.
The newer style plates are a nightmare in my opinion. Until I found Saabnet I didn't have a clue as to how to keep the fingers compressed. I tried wire, washers, nuts, and anything else but the kitchen sink. The general consensus for the newer ones is to use a bucket handle or 1/8 or 3/16 inch rod. Using the weight of the car to compress the fingers will also work for this procedure.
