They're doggedly reliable if you (1) start out with a good one and (2) keep up with the maintenance: change the oil, filter, AND transaxle lube every 3000 mi., adjust valve clearances spring and fall, keep an eye on the fluid and coolant levels, rear brake adjustment, and fan belt tension (keep it just barely tight enough to avoid slipping), flush crud out of the underbody several times every winter, etc. The only "time bomb" part seems to be the balance shaft gear, but on older ones this already may have failed and been replaced. The bottom end of the engine is unbelievably strong -- a very experienced import mechanic told me that for normal driving, if you don't get 250,000 miles out of it, you're not treating it right. Basically, keeping it up is a bit more work than with a modern car, but if you do the work it's just as reliable.
I used to get about 28mpg in mine in mostly around-town driving, low 30s on the highway -- it's not as efficient as a modern econocar with electronically controlled injection, but it's not bad. Now I've got a Sonett, which doesn't do quite as well because I can't resist putting my foot down and hearing the MSS exhaust bark...
