It's REALLY hard to give much of an answer to this question without knowing what flavor of car! This board is for the model 92 through model 99 (those are model numbers, not years), none of which probably qualify as a "newer" SAAB (well, yeah, a 99 is a lot newer than a 92, but still not exactly dewy-fresh...)
If it were a 95 or 96 (those being the ones with which I'm most familiar other than Sonetts) I'd say the problem could be anything from minor (misadjusted shift linkage) to ultra-major (busted gear cluster) but I'd suspect the linkage or shift forks. The problem with fixing is that the transaxle on any Saab is a lot harder to get to than on, say, your average '59 Chevy pickup...
One starting-point clue that ought to work regardless of what car she has is to drain the transaxle lube and look at the magnet on the plug. If you don't see anything except the normal metal slivers, that's a good sign; if you see a whole LOT of slivers or anything recognizable as a chunk outta something, that's baaaaad...
