No way to pull pan with engine in. Most engine noises related to wristpin/rod bearing/mainbearing/piston clearance-slap problems will change character when you short the plug (I do this by pulling the plug boot up the wire to expose the terminal, then you can easily short/unshort with a screwdriver with engine running). Generally I would expect valve train/flywheel/clutch/balance shaft problems to stay the same running on 3 or 4 cylinders. You might try 1) removing each plug in turn then running the engine briefly to see if the noise quits which would isolate it to a particular cylinder, this may not be fruitful because the huffing and puffing out the plug hole will interfere with your listening; 2) removing valve covers then running the engine to see if you can zero in on any valve train noise, this will be very messy; 3) (do this first) just a good old fashioned compression test, might locate a sticking valve; 4) RPM drop test where you short each cylinder in turn (as above) to see if one is contributing less, this could identify a sticking valve (overall that problem is low on my list); 5) check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, hot and cold.
