If it were my car (and in fact this IS exactly what I did with my car) I'd put an oil pressure <b>gauge</b> on it. Even if the sender is working correctly, the oil pressure has to get so low before the warning light comes on that you might as well think of it as a "Replace Engine" light!

The gauge also gives you more information about the overall condition of the engine (e.g. you can see what the pressure is when cold, note how much it drops off once the engine warms up, etc. Sudden changes in this pattern can give you clues as to developing problems.)

You can adapt the gauge sender to replace your warning light switch, but since it's easy to overlook a low gauge reading I decided to keep my warning light and add the gauge as a backup. I bought a brass tee fitting at a hardware store (look in the gas-appliance-fittings section, not the plumbing section) and used it to hook up both; this also let me position the (fat) oil pressure sender so it clears the fuel pump. Alternative: I've been told that VDO gauges can use a sender that has a built-in port for the pressure switch.

If you were able to drive 40 miles at 70+ mph without expensive noises coming out, your oil pressure probably was OK and the switch is just bad (shorted?) but the only way to be really SURE is to back it up with a gauge, IMHO.
