Not having my manual in front of me or a disassembled engine to reference, I'm going from ancient memory. I think that the oil pump is mounted toward the rear of the pan and the pickup tube comes out the front side of the pump and runs forward then turns downward. The screen is on a shallow cone that is about three inches in diameter. I'm not sure where it is in relation to the oil pan drain hole. Your problem might be an obstruction in the main oil gallery that runs down the center of the engine above the crankshaft. This gallery is accessible through a plug on the rear of the engine behind the flywheel, i.e.: you have to take the engine out of the car.
