Hi Paul: Usually the cause of low oil pressure is worn connecting rod bearings. Main bearing usually outlast two or three sets of rod bearings.
Rods and rings usually wear out about the same time. Does it use much/any
oil. If it is using more than a quart of oil every 1K miles, you are probably looking at a ring and rod job. The problem with 96's is psychological. They are so much easier to pull the engine and do the o/hauls than other cars, that the thought of it gradually becomes far
worse than it actually is. I dont know of any other car that is easier
to work on than a 96, unless it is a razor scooter! BTW, My 70 96 engine
ran oil psi of 60# cold and warmed up to 40 on 10W40 oil and the light
never flickers after just putting new rod bearings in.
