72 99 fan question

History: This is an injected 72 99 1854-- pulled the engine out to renew motor mounts, spliced in new wiring to #5 on new/old replacement uncorroded/unburned fuse block and painted the engine bay. Cleaned everything and maybe too well, plus it sat up for about a year. It's back together, starts and runs very well, everything works great (better than before) except that the engine cooling fan wouldn't kick in. Tapped on the thermo switch, fan turned on. Seemed erratic, though, so grounded fan lead (single wire) so fan would stay on. Drove for a while and then engine began cutting out, off/on/off/on/off. Master relay felt hot, had car towed home. After it cooled down,it started fine. Ran for a while, it started to heat up and I grounded the fan therm switch and the engine died. Master relay felt hot.
The radiator goes to the radiator shop in the next few days to get a new thermo switch put in (old one wouldn't come out with my skills) and the Electrolux fan motor goes to small electric motor repair shop for check up.
Having trouble finding a replacement master relay (without knowing if it is a problem).
What else needs to be looked at here? The car is 30 yrs old, I'm going on 60, love the Saab but could easily slip into a brand new Mini Cooper with everything working+++ and a probably great resale value in 10 yrs. But resale isn't the point, is it? The 2 dr 72 99 is still a very cool car.
Hugely appreciate any advice.
