This scared me, too, but yes, you do need to give it a good whack, and no, it won't hurt anything (although you ought to back up the screwdriver with a block of wood or something to protect the transmission case.)
Just prying won't do it -- you've got to push your prying utensil down the back of the U-joint cup on the end of the stub axle, making sure it's pressing against the sturdy metal inner part and not just the lip, and then wedge your wood block against the case to make a fulcrum. Then smartly smite the other end of the prybar with the heel of your hand, and it will pop out.
And when I say pop, I mean pop -- if you're not careful it will jump out and land on your foot, giving you black-and-blue toes for weeks, or hit your car and put a big dent in the fender, or whatever -- so make sure you plan ahead to provide a landing zone for it.
If it doesn't come out, you probably just aren't smacking hard enough -- it takes a stiffer poke than you might think.
Incidentally, the stub axle is secured by an internal snap ring and when it's time to put everything back together, it'll just snap back into place without nearly as much effort as it took to get it out.
