brake/hydraulic bleeding questions

Hi all,
I just picked up a "Mityvac" vacuum pump and brake bleeding kit from Sears, and before I go ahead and use it, I have a couple of questions for those who know more than I do:
I thought that bleeding the brakes with a pump was done by pressurizing the master cylinder? (but my assumption isn't based on anything, really), but the pamphlet that comes with this describes using the vacuum pump at each wheel to draw fluid out throught the bleeder screw rather than pushing it out from the other end. (Now before you think I'm a complete fool, I want to say that the pump has a pressure outlet as well.)
The Haynes manual describes the procedure for bleeding the clutch hydraulic system in terms of pressurizing the master cylinder, but I am wondering if it can be bled with vacuum as well?
OK, last question, the booklet from the vacuum pump mentions bench bleeding the master cylinder before replacing it - neither the Girling instruction book that comes with the cylinder nor the Haynes manual mentions this - am I going to be in trouble if I don't do this, or is it just going to take longer to bleed the system?
These might be silly questions, but I want to make sure I'm doing this right, or if I'm not, that at least I'm not going to hurt anything.
thanks for any info,
Rowan
