Someone must have done it, but why do you WANT to do it?
I've never done exactly this, but I did put a 'bicycle computer' in my Sonett. My speedometer works fine, but the trip odo sticks on numbers ending in 50 until I 'help' it with the reset knob (bad gear, I guess) so it was hard to keep track of how far I was driving on trips, how long since last fillup or oil change, etc.
So, the bicycle computer. This is an electronic gadget you can buy in bike shops for $35-40 (or try http://www.branfordbike.com online.) It has a magnet that goes on a rotating part (I used a tie-wrap to attach mine to an inner U-joint cup), a sensor that mounts within 5mm of the magnet (I epoxied mine onto the transaxle case), a wire that runs up from the sensor (you may need to splice in a bit extra) and a little LCD readout unit, about 1-1/2 inches square, that mounts inside the car.
You program the readout unit with the exact circumference of your wheels (roll the car along the garage floor exactly one turn and measure) and then the computer is set. Mine has readouts for current speed (very accurate), a cumulative odo plus two-channel trip odo, clock, trip time, average speed for trip, and a little pointer that indicates whether your current speed is above or below the trip average. It's a fun gadget and a cheap band-aid for dodgy speedo or odo...
