Brain: I've started lots of old engines with used parts, and new rings and
bearings without worrying about the oil pressure, but these new kids have
convinced me that if you have spent a lot of time and money in rebuilding
an engine, and want everything "JUST RIGHT", you should spin the oil pump to preoil the camshaft and other moving parts, BEFORE you turn the engine over. The hot rod guys have been doing this for years, especially when they
put a new camshaft in. To access the oil pump on a V/4, you need to remove
the distributor to get to the top of the oil pump drive shaft. I believe I
saw a post two or three months ago on this same subject that said a Sears
1/4" socket and 1/4" drive extension would do the trick. You might search
the archive for "oil pump" "preoiling" or something like that. Good Luck.
