Had this as well. You will find that the float chamber sits much lower on this carb than the Ford VV, hence a lot closer to the thermostat housing. What seems to happen is that the float chamber heats up so much that it vapourises the fuel contained in it, which in turn causes all sorts of problems. I've just finished the 2002 World Cup Rally in a 96 and got this problem repeatedly after a test section when the car was stationary and idling. The idle speed went down to 500rpm and if you turn the engine off and listen you can actually hear the fuel boiling in the float chamber. Simple to fix though : place a heat shield between the float chamber and thermostat housing and paint the float chamber with some heat resistant paint. Another idea I'm working on is placing a CPU fan out of a desktop PC on the side of the float chamber. You could go for a thicker adapter plate between manifold and carb but then there is a possibility that the K&N air filter will foul with the bonnet.
