The Sonett and 96 transaxles are the same, so you might be able to glean some useful info by reading Jack (MSS) Lawrence's article in the 'Sonett Secrets' section of Chris Moberg's 'Vintage Saab' website. Be sure to go down to the updated info at the bottom, as Jack started out with a fine-tuned stock transaxle and later switched to a VW Superbeetle transaxle (with extensive modifications) as a result of rule changes.
People have talked here about adapting Subaru transaxles, too -- I remember one person suggesting using an automatic, as it makes the shift linkage a lot less complicated -- but I don't know where you'd go for info.
Question: Why do you need a 'stronger' transaxle? Saab routinely routed the output of 165hp rally engines through the original trans. Maybe you ought to be trying to hunt down one of the Sport & Rally cast-iron transaxle casings to strengthen the original box -- then send Jack L. or Chris a sack of money to have 'em set it up for your specific application. Might be easier than trying to adapt something else (you'll see what's involved when you read the Jack L. article...)
