Shortening 5-speed linkage

I have a '78 99T with a 5-speed from a 900. It never shifted very well, and I often wondered whether it was the transmission itself or just the linkage that was out of sorts. (The transmission recently went - pinion bearing) but that doesn't necessarily mean that the linkage wasn't a problem too. Jude Demeis (http://www.demeis.com/motorsport/hardware/saab99story.html) put a 5-speed in his 99, and he shortened the linkage. I e-mailed him, but he didn't remember how much he had shortened it (he did it 7 years ago).
Basically though, he measured the distance from tranny to shifter in a 900 5-speed and compared it to the distance tranny to shifter in a 99 4-speed and then cut off the difference with a hacksaw.
My question is: does anybody know those measurements or have a 5-speed and a 4-speed linkage arm to compare?
Thanks,
Miles Muri
