Slide hammer technique is a good way to destroy the gear teeth. The Saab manual definitely states that the slide hammer technique is only for the very first series pump in the early 99's with the Triumph engine. I have pulled the pump using a nut on the shaft [ left-hand thread ] holding a large flat washer. Then two Stanley 'Wonder Bars' at the same time - apply pressure between the two bars, pulling up on the washerfrom both sides at once - I worked with small blocks of wood and tapered shims - I had the spark plugs out and turned the engine by hand to encourage the gears to stay 'loose'. You want to pull up but not with such force and distance that the gears bind and damage each other as the pump pulls up. If the engine doesn't turn the pump shaft must rotate as the pump pulls up to disengage the gears. As I worked I rocked the impeller back and forth to make sure the gears were loose and not binding. The advantage to the Saab tool is that it supplies upward pull on the pump shaft with a bearing that allows the shaft to turn. Since then I have thought that two large flat washers [ fender washers ]with the faces between them polished [ fine wet/dry paper on a flat surface ]and well greased might provide the necessary freedom for the shaft to turn. Whatever you do work slowly and carefully. I believe the bottom line is find a tool to rent or borrow if at all possible. I have found pumps available from local parts house - ASC Industries, 'Signature Series' - they include the left hand nut and locally cost = $60.
