Hi Ed. I experienced the same problem last summer. The best solution in my opinion is to do away with the existing noisy fan mechanism. Take off the fan belt and remove the four bolts that holds the fan blade. Obtain a dremel or an angle grinder with a cut off blade, and slice the potrusion off (fan bearing mount) flush to the timing cover. Circle all around the potrusion until you see yellow sparks.( an indication that you penetrated past the aluminum timing cover. Twist off the fan bearing mount, and you will see a nice round hole that a freeze plug will seal perfectly. If you're leaving the original radiator, then obtain a "slim" puller fan that you can mount to the back of radiator. To activate the fan, I cut the top hose, and installed a 900 AC coupling.( Remove the existing AC switch and replace with a 900 thermoswitch so that the fan comes on automatically. The job is well worth it and easier done than edxplained. Finaly, you can unglue your eyes off the temp guage, and instead look out for smokey. If you have any additional questions, post them.
