... I think the factory recco of locking the freewheel for mountain driving was based on the assumption that you would NOT be coasting downhill for miles with the throttle closed (which WOULD be bad for the bearings.) When I drive in the hills I'm almost always using a certain amount of throttle to maintain the speed I want; it's only occasionally that I have to back out of the throttle all the way, and then it's generally only for a few seconds. (Ditto on slippery surfaces, by the way.)
What would be dangerous under these conditions is that with freewheel unlocked, the car would just pick up speed continually rather than being regulated by the throttle; you'd have to ride the brakes, and if they faded out (not totally impossible especially on the drum-braked strokers) then you'd REALLy have a problem -- if you think oil starvation is bad for the engine bearings, you should see what going off a cliff does to them!
What it all comes down to is that to drive a stroker you have to use your BRAIN a little bit, which is part of the fun but also helps explain why they were never super-popular with the general public!
