Don't go thicker in 96 box!

Since PK mentioned his 96 box, word of warning: Redline MTL and Amsoil are fine, but don't be tempted to stick any old 90W oil in a 96 gearbox -- original specs called for SAE75-80 which is hard to find. Problem with heavy oil is that there's a little oil catcher cup in the upper rear corner of the end plate of the transaxle -- catches drips of oil flung off the gears and feeds it to the rear shaft bearings. If the oil is too thick, not enough gets flung off and the bearing runs dry, ouch, screech.
After Saab dealers stopped stocking the special Saab gearbox oil, lots of people would put in straight 90W gear oil figuring that the thicker oil would "quiet down the gears" or something... now you know where 95/96/Sonett got their reputation for unreliable gearboxes!
