had the "shakes" at lower speeds, would stall sometimes on start up, finally would occasionally not start. '95 900S 2.3 auto. 82,000 miles. had battery checked was fine. dash lights would also dim sometimes.
checks the posts and ordered an ignition switch. started after dinner (7) and finished at 9.
1. remove the front footwell plastic covers. the driver's side has a screw at the bottom and one at the top in plain view. the passenger side has one at the bottom in plain view and one behind the glove box door, open it and you'll see it. once these screws are out, work the covers to the front of the car to clear the tabs in the front console that they join. if you don't get it forward, you break the tabs. remove the covers.
2. pull back on the front console, near the top. the top will pull back and clear the dash. leave it loose, and disconnect the switches and other connections. it'll be obvious where they connect back to, so don;t worry. once al these wires are off, remove the front of the console.
3. the center console has a small cover that basically surrounds the igntion switch. pry it up at the rear with a flat screwdriver. this stuff is soft so don't mar it. lift the center console off. now remoce the ashtray in the rear console. take out the screw under it. remove two gold colored nuts from just inside the ashtray location (10mm). lift the entire rear console off, working it over the seatbelts, while you reach under and unplug the plug to the power window switch and the lighting switch to the left odf gthe shifter. the plug to the power windows comes off in a down direction. you can get to it by reaching thru the brushes where the brake handle is. the light plug unplugs by pulling it to the rear. a good place for all this plastic is on top of the car, dont step on em.
4. pull the rear heat vent off. it pulls down at the front, nothing holding it on. it goes from the front all the way the length of the console.
5. use the 10mm with an extension to take off the 4 screws that secure the shifter to the floor. one on each corner. when loose, turn it over, towrds the drivers side. the igniton switch is cylinrical, and is in a vertical position secures by two screws and plugged in to it connector. remove the screws, unplug and plug in the new one.
6. replace the lightbulb to the gear shift indicator light while you are in there. I took the opportunity to install a switch to control the power attentae also.
7. reverse all this. take your time, don't break/mar that soft plastic. good time to detail those nooks and crannies too.
hardest part was seating the plug to the power windows, kinda tight in there. what a huge difference in starting/idling.
