My 97 V6 900 (76000 miles) has developed a strange problem. Its happened twice in the last three days. I filled the gas tank, and then started to drive away and there is hardly any power at all. The engine won't rev past 1500 rpm or so and the car will only do about 10 miles an hour on level ground. I tried to make it home and going down hill the car did 30 mph and revved to 2000 rpm but that was it. I put it in neutral and the same deal. I dropped into lower gears (automatic trans) and the car did slow down, making me think the transmission is OK. Then it just sort of went back to running normal and it had plenty of power like nothing was wrong. I ran it again the next day and it seemed fine from start to return. I used it several hours later and I had the same problem, no power, no revs. I returned home and got to the driveway and it was fine!

It almost feels like vapor lock that happened to me in my VW bug years ago in the summer, but I should mention that I'm in northern Massachusetts and its really cold here. The engine sounds alright, it just won't take more gas and rev higher until all of a sudden it returns to normal! I thought the first time that it happened that I had overfilled the gas tank, but the last time it happened I shouldn't have had a full to the top tank.

I'm wondering if this could be something in my fuel line, dirt or ice, the dreaded non-vented gas cap problem, or just a signal to plan for the end!! The engine has been real strong since I bought it last summer, the timing belts were changed by Saab, etc.

ANy clues?

All help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris
