Well - my recent '94 does much the same for 5th. It's like a piece of gate (which I don't think the machine has) is missing. As you say, just takes a couple of times to get 'the feel'.

As to reverse lock - I haven't had my NG900 long so I can't say that I've tried to put it into reverse without pulling up the lockout. I tend to 'cup' the shifter anyway - so I usually end up working the lockout ring in all gears. On the other hand - I'm not sure it's all that alarming if the lift ring doesn't require operation to get into reverse.

You knew something was seriously wrong when you could pop it in or out of reverse with the key out on the C900. By that time, it was then worth opening up the center console to see what had come loose.

Very interested if anyone has the low-down on this one though.
