Finally had time to study this. This is the most complex and well written DIY posting I have ever seen!
A great technical writer.
I would add that a shop vac does a good job of clearing out the heater core or the rad when both ends are open. The rad drain valve is hard to get at and some have it damaged as a result. Removal of the rad hose makes a grand mess. You can run a 1/4 nylon 'catheter' into the reservoir and down its lower hose as far a a tee junction that stops it and drain out over a gallon from there as a syphon. Then remove the upper rad hose and go down the rad's side tank and get the rest. This can be close to a zero spill coolant removal. If you are doing the stat, it works well. However, drain all you want and the rad and heater cores will hold a lot of fluid. Thats where the shop vac will remove the fluid and leave things quite dry. I use a shop vac to evac and dry pipes when doing plumbing work where you really need to get the water out to solder properly.
Given that o-rings harden, its silly that the heater cores and coolant pumps are been pulled because of aged o-rings. There really needs to be a better solution. For the core, having the core pipes poke through the fire wall and be hose clamped would really be much better. But perhaps a silicone o-ring or some other material would not harden up with heat over the years. Rear seal and distributor seals are other winners.
