Timing Chain, Balance Shaft Chain Questions Posted by iveand [Email] (#3155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from iveand) on Thu, 5 Feb 2004 12:21:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While examining valve cover recently, I noticed that the top timing chain "guide" had 2 groves worn in it due to the chain. Not major. After putting it back together and reading here, I saw some info on checking the timing chain tensioner and re-adjusting it. I want to get back in there and do this when I get a chance (spring). I do hear a slight "rattling" when idling .. esp in the cold. Any further advice on this procedure?
The other question: I just read a few posts saying that some have successfully removed the balance shaft chain and not re-installed it. They said it made no difference to the operation of the engine. Is this true? I hear that sludge may speed up a balance shaft chain failure. Could this be my noise anyway? Should I just remove it? Can someone else speak of this possibility?
