Just taken my car in to the local Saab specialist for a timing belt change on the gm v6 boat anchor.

In addition to the $600 for the belt, tensioner and pulleys, he also is redoing the cam seals. This is something that if they are leaking, oil can piss out and possibly cause the timing belt to skip and fail, so I would say get them checked out when the timing belt is done.

I am also another victim of poor quality oem parts - the water pump and serp pullies are also being replaced just over 12 months and 18000 miles.

I shudder to think what would have happened had I trusted my dealer with the work order for just the "free" timing belt service.

If you love your Saab take it to your indie, trust their advice and do what is necessary. I would always pay more attention to a car maintained by an established indie specialist than by a dealer: the dealer can only survive by selling new cars, the indie by keeping yours running to your satisfaction. Shouldn't we have a directory of recommended indies on this site that we can keep for reference ?
