I tried persuading my wife that what was diagnosed as a rotted flex pipe by an indie mechanic was actually the Saab trademark "throaty roar." No dice.
Our flex pipe bit the dust at 75K here in lovely, well-salted Massachusetts, so you might be due for one. I think the stock and OEM replacements are aluminized steel, which corrodes from both the inside and outside. Condensation will leave liquid along the inside of the pipe, and road salt and the elements will attack it from the outside. If you're planning on keeping the car until it dies, then stainless steel is the way to go. However, I've heard of folks prepping the OEM versions by coating the inside and outside of the pipes with a high-temperature rust-proofing primer like Rustoleum or, more expensively, POR-15. but...DON'T PAINT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER!!!!
good luck!
