In the past week my '97 SE got an alignment at the dealer which I wasn't too impressed with so I ended up buying all new winter michelin tires thinking mine were aging and a new set would introduce more safety into the equation. Then the dealership re-assessed the alignment and gave their blessing. Pulling into my driveway, I heard a rubbing noise coming from the front extremeties of the suspension when turning the steering wheel (with car in motion) in either direction. Contacted the dealership and they denied it could be anything that they have done so here I was on my own thinking big $$ for repairs (i.e. wheel bearing, front axle, etc). Crawling under the car, I couldn't see anything wrong. tie rod ends were tight. Jacked-up the car and hassled the wheel up and down and again it was sturdy which meant the wheel bearing/hub was intact. My head is about to burst now part because of worrying and part because of the cold (-20 celcius). I wasn't yet ready to give up so I proceeded to unbolt the wheel and here it was. As soon as I touched the backing plate it made contact with the rotor. I wasn't sure though that was the problem as I didn't want to be too optimistic. Bottom line is I backed the plate all around the rotor as hard as I could. Put everything back up and started cirling around in the parking lot. To my suprise, that was the cause and the rubbing noise was gone. Couldn't believe it, It put a grin on my face all night long. I was quite satisfied.
Moral: I saw lots of posts on here with similar description and this simple fix might be the end of your problems. I now am sure that the mechanic was careless getting the wheel off the hub but letting it fall on the brake assembly then to the ground.
Cheers.
