[Pasting in from a couple of my old posts on this issue:]
Press Auto and Off at the same time. It goes through a self-test and reports the number of faults it found - but not which ones unfortunately. Ideally, you'll see a zero on the screen for about 30 seconds while it goes through its routine of changing fan speed and testing all the vents. Probably a good idea to do it 1-2 times a year anyway.
My theory about the little adjustment motors (which I've spent some quality time sorting out - see old postings) is that sometimes something messes up the relationship between where the ACC thinks things are and the real position of the actuating linkages. Once, I ran the calibration with all the moving parts exposed and from what I saw, I believe the calibration routine cycles the motors back and forth from one end of their range to another and uses that to re-define for the ACC computer just where things are. Kind of like re-calibrating your PC joystick.
That sensor measures the interior cabin temp. Others have posted about it - in my case, it wasn't an issue, so I haven't had the need to learn more so far (fingers crossed).
