Upgrade front brakes and master cylinder question Posted by mike TX [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I finally got around to putting on the '97 900 front brakes on my '96 900SETC. I replaced the original brakes because of an issue with the calipers. When I originally changed the rotor to the power slot rotors (the groove looks like an atomic symbol) the pads would grab the groove and ended up bending the caliper or guide pins. The inside pad bottom and the outer pad top wore out much faster leading to angled pads.
The '97 calipers and rotors fit with no problem- same bolt pattern. The '97 front brake rotors are only 1/4" larger in diameter, not too much gain here, but the calipers are much sturdier. I had to trim the splash guard in order for them to fit. This took about a half hour with a dremel tool.
Unfortunately I now have a problem with the master cylinder. Yes, I have heard the warnings about going to far down with the peddle when bleeding, unfortunitaly i meantioned this to my assistance a little too late. The problem is that after I bled the brakes and took it out for a slow spin (the peddle was fairly soft- I atributed this to the pads restings on the worn lip of the used rotors) I found out that brake fluid was forcing its way out the cap on the master cylinder. The resevoir should not have presure, but even after tightening the cap, fluid would force its way out. Do I need a new master cylinder, or can I fix this.
Thanks for your help.
