I had the same problem with my '97 900S convertible, and fixed it last week. The sender in the fuel tank failed- one of the wires corroded away. You can check with an ohmmeter by unplugging the connector under the back seat (under the round plastic cover). There are two connectors under the cover- the brown one is the sender, the blue one is the fuel pump. If you read an open ciruit (on the female side of the connector), the sender is bad. If it's bad, it's probably easier to change the fuel pump assembly than to repair the sender. You can buy used on eBay or new from online suppliers. '94-'97 are all the same.
