I use to follow the same line of thinking with the good tires up front to handle steering and braking and the rears just going along for the ride, but have recently been convinced that the opposite is true. If the good tires are up front, there is a bigger chance that as the fronts grab hard the rear tires may break loose- a situation that is difficult to handle even for proffessional drivers. With the not as good tires up front, you don't run the risk of swapping ends. You will have more understeer, but this is not nearly as dangerous as sudden oversteer.
