The ignition switch would, I believe, cure your symptoms. What about just soaking the key mechanism with some teflon lube first? I would try that.
I replaced the ignition switch last summer. For me it was electrical problems, but I noticed that it did change the feel of turning the key. The turning became more "positive" with a tighter feel and stronger spring return out of the start position.
You say you don't think it's the ignition switch but rather what it sits in. I would say it's not the lock cylinder (which is on top) but what it sits in--which is the ignition switch. The switch is the springloaded part with notches for each of the off/acc/on/start positions and, of course, different electrical contacts made in each.
It's a DIY if you have 2-3 hours and some ambition. Part cost is $120 (eeuroparts.com) to $150 (dealer). Search the archives. I have a post on this from last June. Others have given better ones; see link below.
