This weekend I recharged my A/C in my 1995 900SE. The AC has never worked since we bought the car in October, though the owner swore up and down that it worked fine for her before she sold it to us. I had never done anything on an AC before so I didn't really know what to expect. I bought one of the recharge kits with the hose, a pressure gague and 3 cans of r134a (11 oz r134a, a couple ounces of conditioner, a couple ounces of oil; 15 oz total in the can). At first, the clutch wasn't spinning at all. Then, per the instructions on the can, I added a can of 134. The pressure went up to about 28 or so and then went back down to nearly nothing when the clutch began spinning. I left the can attached for about 20-25 minutes until it was empty and the pressure never went up. I added two more cans. Each time I attached the can, the pressure would go up to about 20 or 25 and then would drop down to about 12 after about 30 seconds while the rest of the can emptied into the system. The pressure never rose above 12. Also, without any pattern I could assign to it, the indicator window would have many bubbles rushing around as liquid ran through it and then would be dormant (and seemingly empty).
While it was recharging, I felt the air coming out of the vents. The drivers side would fluctuate between ambient temperature and cold AC-type air. The passenger side vent emitted nothing but warm air; not really hot, but warmer than ambient temp; and that temperature didn't fluctuate.
What's going on? It sounds like I have a few problems, but I'm not sure where to start. Do I need to add more coolant to bring the pressure up to speed? I thought 3 cans would do it and I wanted to check before adding more. What else? Thanks in advance.
